Bad Breath

Are You Experiencing Bad Breath?

Bad breath can be an unpleasant issue, affecting not only you but also those around you. At Mount Barker Dentists, our Oral Health Therapists are dedicated to assisting you in addressing your bad breath worries.

You don’t have to resign yourself to living with bad breath, avoiding social engagements, or experimenting with ineffective home remedies. We provide practical and honest advice to help reduce unpleasant oral odours.

Breaking Down Bad Breath

Bad breath, also known as halitosis, can have various causes, including a bad diet, wrong oral hygiene techniques, and inconsistent dental cleanings and check-ups.

However, the solution can differ for each individual. Some patients may still experience bad breath even after cleaning, which can result from a buildup of bacteria on the teeth and gums. Proper cleaning techniques are essential, and many people rush through this process.

Causes of Bad Breath and Treatment

In the early stages of gum disease, such as gingivitis, gums may become inflamed, red, swollen, and prone to bleeding. However, maintaining a strong oral hygiene routine that includes brushing your teeth twice a day, using dental floss, and seeing your dentist for regular check-ups can help prevent the buildup of plaque.

Conversely, poor dental hygiene practices can lead to bad breath. If you neglect regular brushing, fail to clean dentures, use tobacco products, or don’t drink enough water to flush out trapped food particles during the day, you may experience unpleasant breath. Consistent oral care is essential for preventing these issues.

No one should feel the need to constantly cover their mouth or rely on breath mints to mask avoidable odours.
A bad breath treatment can help restore your naturally odourless breath.

Reducing or Preventing Bad Breath

  • Brush for 2-3 minutes a day to get rid of plaque and food, but avoid brushing too vigorously to protect your tooth enamel.

  • If at all possible, brush and floss your teeth after consuming sugary treats; if not, rinse your mouth out with water and keep it clean.

  • Remember to scrub your tongue! Gently brush it with a toothbrush or a scraper to fight bad breath.

  • Get rid of food trapped in your teeth that your toothbrush can’t reach. If you have concerns about the spacing or alignment of your teeth, get in touch with our team.

  • Consume at least 2 litres of water a day to prevent getting dry mouth and wash away food and bacteria.

  • Tobacco leads to dry mouth, creating an odour that many people find unpleasant– a good reason to quit!

  • Schedule routine check-ups at Littlehampton Dental to maintain optimal oral health. Contact us here for an appointment if bad breath persists.
